Transmission trouble is the repair every driver dreads — high stakes, high price tags, and a lot of bad advice floating around. Ernie's Automotive Service has been handling transmission repair, rebuilds, replacements, and scheduled maintenance for east-side Columbus drivers since 1978. Nearly five decades of diagnosing the difference between a minor service issue and a major internal failure — and quoting both options honestly when they apply.
Not every shift problem is a dying transmission. Sometimes it's a failed sensor, a worn solenoid, or old fluid. We diagnose accurately before recommending the expensive repair, because a wrong diagnosis on a transmission is the difference between a $400 fix and a $5,000 one.
Transmissions rarely fail without warning. Catching the symptoms early — before slipping becomes a no-drive situation — saves significant money:
Any of this happening? Don't keep driving and hoping. Call Ernie's at (614) 235-8037 for a diagnostic. Transmission problems always cost more tomorrow than they do today.
From routine fluid service to full rebuilds, Ernie's handles the complete range of transmission work on automatic, manual, CVT, and dual-clutch transmissions:
Scan tool reads, pressure tests, fluid-condition analysis, and road tests to pinpoint the actual problem. Transmissions are too expensive to guess on — diagnosis first, every time.
Scheduled fluid exchanges and filter replacements on automatic, manual, and CVT transmissions. We verify the correct fluid specification for your vehicle — using the wrong fluid can cause immediate damage, especially on CVTs and dual-clutch automatics.
Solenoid replacement, valve body repair, sensor replacement, and external component repair — the kind of targeted fixes that address a specific failure without rebuilding the whole unit.
Full rebuild of the transmission — disassembly, inspection, replacement of worn components, and reassembly — when internal wear is too extensive for targeted repair.
Installation of remanufactured or OE replacement transmissions when rebuild isn't the right answer. Quality reman units carry meaningful warranties and often cost less than a complete rebuild.
On manual transmissions: clutch disc, pressure plate, release bearing, pilot bearing, and clutch hydraulic system. Flywheel resurfacing or replacement when needed. We do manual transmission work properly — not a rushed job.
Differential fluid service, transfer case fluid service, and repair of AWD and 4WD driveline components. Gear oil changes at manufacturer intervals prevent expensive differential failures.
Driveshaft, CV axles, U-joints, and driveline components. Related to transmission work and often the actual source of vibration or noise drivers assume is transmission-related.
Transmission work is expensive enough that the diagnosis has to be right. We scan, pressure-test, and road-test before quoting a rebuild — because solenoid issues and valve body problems often mimic major internal failure.
Sometimes the right answer isn't a rebuild — it's a remanufactured unit, a targeted repair, or (honestly) a discussion about whether the vehicle is worth the investment. We'll tell you, not just sell you.
Nearly five decades of servicing automatics, manuals, and increasingly CVTs. That experience matters more on transmission work than almost any other automotive repair.

Different transmissions need different fluids and different service procedures. We verify the manufacturer specification before service — especially on CVTs, where the wrong fluid can cause immediate damage.

Common questions from east-side Columbus drivers dealing with transmission trouble or planning scheduled service.
The most common signs are slipping (engine revs climb but the vehicle doesn't accelerate as expected), hard or delayed shifting, a thump or clunk when shifting from park to drive or reverse, shifting at the wrong RPM, a burning smell from the transmission fluid, red or brown fluid leaks under the vehicle, a check engine light with transmission codes, or grinding, whining, or buzzing noises. Any of these deserve a diagnostic soon — transmission problems almost always get worse and much more expensive the longer they're ignored.
Transmission work varies enormously by vehicle and problem. A fluid exchange and filter service typically runs a few hundred dollars. A specific repair — replacing a solenoid, a valve body, or a sensor — might run $500–$1,500. A rebuild or remanufactured replacement typically runs $3,000–$6,000 and can be higher on certain vehicles. We diagnose first, explain what we found, and provide a written estimate so you can make an informed decision. Call (614) 235-8037 for a quote on your specific vehicle.
It depends on the failure, the vehicle's value, and the condition of the rest of the car. A specific failed component (a solenoid, a valve body) is usually a repair. Widespread internal wear typically means a rebuild or a remanufactured replacement unit. A good rule of thumb: if the transmission repair cost exceeds roughly 50% of the vehicle's current value and the rest of the vehicle is in rough shape, replacement of the vehicle may make more financial sense than a major transmission investment. We'll give you an honest assessment of the whole picture, not just a transmission quote.
It depends on the transmission type and the driving conditions. Most traditional automatic transmissions benefit from fluid service every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. CVTs (continuously variable transmissions) and some dual-clutch automatics have specific fluid requirements and intervals — and using the wrong fluid can damage them. Your owner's manual is the definitive source. Vehicles used for towing, stop-and-go driving, or heavy loads should service more frequently. If you don't know when your transmission was last serviced, we can check the condition of the fluid and tell you whether service is due.
Usually no — and this is one place where well-meaning advice from a quick-lube can actually cause harm. A transmission that's already slipping has worn internal components; sometimes the old, slightly thicker fluid is the only thing still allowing it to hold. Replacing that fluid with fresh, thinner fluid can reveal the underlying wear and accelerate failure. The right answer is to diagnose why it's slipping first. If the diagnosis is that fluid service is still appropriate, we do it; if the transmission needs repair or replacement, flushing it won't save it.
A true flush uses pressure to force fluid through the system, which can dislodge debris and cause damage in older or marginal transmissions. A fluid exchange is gentler — typically either a pan drop and filter change (replacing 40–50% of the fluid) or a machine-based exchange (replacing 90%+). For most modern transmissions, exchange is the right service. For some transmissions, the manufacturer specifically recommends pan-drop-only service. We verify the correct procedure for your vehicle before performing any transmission service.
Yes. Continuously variable transmissions (CVTs), common on Nissan, Honda, Subaru, and Toyota vehicles, require specific CVT fluid — not standard ATF — and specific service procedures. Using the wrong fluid or service technique can cause immediate damage. We're equipped with the correct fluids and diagnostic information for CVT service and repair.
Yes. Ernie's services automatic transmissions, manual transmissions, and the increasingly common CVTs and dual-clutch automatics. Manual transmission work includes clutch replacement, flywheel resurfacing or replacement, and clutch hydraulic repair. Differentials and transfer cases on AWD and 4WD vehicles are also part of the driveline work we handle.
