Conventional oil is refined from crude. Full synthetic is engineered from the molecule up. Every measurable difference favors synthetic:
- Better cold-start protection — synthetic flows faster when temperatures drop, reducing the engine wear that happens in the first thirty seconds after a cold Columbus morning start.

Why does Ernie's only use full synthetic oil?
Because it's what we'd put in our own vehicles. Full synthetic resists breakdown, flows better on cold mornings, holds up under high operating temperatures, keeps engine internals cleaner, and lasts longer between changes. The per-change cost is only slightly higher than conventional, but the protection is meaningfully better — so we made it the standard across every oil change we perform rather than charging extra for the better product.
How much does a synthetic oil change cost at Ernie's?

Final price depends on your vehicle's oil capacity and filter, but our everyday price is competitive with what quick-lube shops charge for conventional oil. How often should I change synthetic oil?
Most vehicles running full synthetic can go 5,000 to 7,500 miles between changes, and some manufacturers approve up to 10,000 miles. Short trips, stop-and-go driving on I-70 or Broad Street, towing, and heavy summer or winter conditions all shorten the interval. We'll set a realistic schedule based on your vehicle's specs and how you actually drive — not a generic sticker number.
Can I switch to synthetic if my car has always used conventional?
Yes. The old story that switching causes leaks is a myth — synthetic is fully compatible with conventional oil and works in any engine designed for it. Making the switch usually gives older engines better wear protection and helps clean up existing deposits. The only case where we'd discuss options is a very high-mileage engine with pre-existing leaks, where a high-mileage synthetic formula may be the smarter pick.
