An overheating engine is one of the fastest ways to turn a $200 repair into a $5,000 repair. Your cooling system has one job — keep the engine at proper operating temperature — and when it fails, the damage can be immediate and expensive. Ernie's Automotive Service has been diagnosing and repairing radiators, water pumps, thermostats, hoses, and cooling fans for east-side Columbus drivers since 1978.
Whether you need a radiator replacement, a coolant exchange (what many drivers call a "radiator flush"), a water pump, or a full cooling-system diagnostic, we handle it honestly — repair when repair makes sense, replacement when replacement is the right call. Forty-eight years in business means we've seen every way a cooling system can fail.
Cooling system problems rarely come out of nowhere — they usually give you warning signs first. Pay attention to these:
Any of this happening? Call Ernie's at (614) 235-8037. Cooling-system repair is dramatically cheaper than the engine repair that follows if you keep driving.
Cooling is a system, not a single component. We service all of it — from the radiator and water pump to the sensors and fans that keep everything in balance:
When a radiator's plastic tanks crack, the core is corroded, or a pinhole leak develops, replacement is usually the right answer. Quality aftermarket or OE-equivalent radiators, proper fluid refill, and system bleed.
Not every leak requires replacement. Hose fittings, failed gaskets, and some tank-to-core seal issues can be repaired. We diagnose first, then quote both options where they apply.
What most people call a "radiator flush" or "coolant flush" is actually a coolant exchange — using a machine that replaces 90%+ of the old coolant safely. We use the correct coolant for your vehicle's specifications.
Water pumps typically fail with a leak at the weep hole, a bearing whine, or outright failure. On many engines, water pump replacement is best done with timing belt or serpentine belt service — one labor operation, two repairs.
A stuck-closed thermostat causes overheating; a stuck-open thermostat prevents the engine from reaching proper operating temperature (hurts fuel economy and heater performance). Thermostat replacement is typically a quick, cost-effective repair.
Upper and lower radiator hoses, heater hoses, and bypass hoses all age, crack, and swell over time. Replacement before failure is far better than roadside overheating. We recommend proactive replacement when hoses show age.
Electric cooling fans and fan clutches are critical at low speeds and idle. Failed fans cause overheating in traffic. We diagnose fan motors, relays, temperature sensors, and wiring.
Finding the source of a slow coolant leak requires pressurizing the system and watching for drips. We identify the exact leak point before replacing parts — not after.
You'll see both terms used interchangeably, but they're not the same service. A true radiator flush historically meant running cleaning chemicals through the cooling system — and on modern vehicles, those chemicals can damage seals, gaskets, and plastic components.
A coolant exchange uses a machine that pushes new coolant in as old coolant comes out, typically replacing 90% or more of the fluid. That's the service modern vehicles actually need, and it's what we perform. When our customers ask for a "flush," we perform a coolant exchange — safer for your vehicle and more effective than a basic drain-and-fill (which only replaces about 40% of the coolant and leaves contaminated fluid in the engine block).
Different coolants also don't mix well. Using the wrong color or type can cause sludging and corrosion. We verify the correct coolant specification before any service.
Not every cooling issue means a new radiator. We pressure-test, diagnose, and quote repair vs. replacement honestly — often saving customers significantly vs. a blanket replacement recommendation.
When we service your coolant, we exchange 90%+ of the fluid using a machine — not just drain the radiator and refill. Bigger difference in performance than most drivers realize.
Nearly five decades of diagnosing radiators, water pumps, thermostats, and cooling fans. That experience shows up in faster diagnosis and cleaner repairs.
Qualifying cooling system repairs backed by the NAPA AutoCare 24-month / 24,000-mile nationwide warranty — honored at 17,000+ NAPA AutoCare shops across the country.
Different vehicles require different coolant chemistries. We identify and use the manufacturer-specified coolant — never the generic green "universal" some shops default to.
Cooling system work varies widely in cost. We inspect, diagnose, and provide a written estimate before any work begins. No surprise charges on the invoice.
Common questions from east-side Columbus drivers about radiator repair, coolant exchange, and cooling system service.
Most people use the terms interchangeably, but they're not the same thing. A true radiator flush historically meant running cleaning chemicals through the cooling system, and on modern vehicles those chemicals can damage seals and gaskets. A coolant exchange uses a machine that pushes new coolant in as old coolant comes out — typically replacing 90% or more of the fluid. That's the service modern vehicles actually need, and it's what we perform at Ernie's. When a customer asks for a "flush," we perform a coolant exchange — safer for the vehicle, and far more effective than a simple drain-and-fill.
It depends on the coolant type and the vehicle. Traditional green coolant typically needs exchange every 30,000 miles or three years. Long-life coolants (often dyed orange, red, yellow, pink, or blue) are designed for 100,000–150,000 miles. Your owner's manual is the definitive source. If you don't know which coolant your vehicle uses or when it was last serviced, we'll test the condition and pH and tell you whether it's still doing its job.
Radiator replacement cost varies significantly by vehicle. Most passenger cars fall in the $400–$900 range for parts and labor using quality aftermarket or OE-equivalent radiators; some trucks, luxury vehicles, or engines with complex cooling systems can run higher. We give a written estimate after inspection, and where repair of the existing radiator is possible (for example, a leaking tank seal), we'll quote that as an alternative. Call (614) 235-8037 for a quote on your specific vehicle.
The most common causes are a low coolant level (often from a leak), a failed thermostat stuck closed, a failed water pump, a clogged radiator, a broken cooling fan or fan relay, or — in serious cases — a blown head gasket. Overheating almost always gets worse the longer you drive it, and sustained overheating can damage or destroy an engine. If your temperature gauge climbs into the red, pull over, shut off the engine, and let it cool. Then call for a tow or a ride — don't keep driving to "just make it home."
Coolant is typically bright green, orange, pink, yellow, red, or blue depending on type, and has a sweet smell. If you see colored fluid under your vehicle that isn't oil (dark brown or black) or transmission fluid (reddish), and especially if it smells sweet, you likely have a coolant leak. Common leak points are radiator hoses, hose clamps, the water pump, the radiator itself (pinhole leaks or cracked plastic tanks), the thermostat housing, and the heater core. We pressure-test cooling systems to pinpoint the exact source before quoting a repair.
It depends on where and how the radiator is leaking. A leaking hose fitting or a failed gasket between the radiator core and the plastic tank can sometimes be repaired. A crack in the plastic tank or a hole in the core itself is typically a replacement — stop-leak products buy you a few days or weeks at best and can clog heater cores and water pumps. We'll inspect and tell you honestly whether repair is a realistic option for your specific situation.
Heater problems are often cooling-system problems in disguise. Low coolant, a stuck-open thermostat, a failed water pump, or a clogged heater core can all prevent heat from reaching the cabin. In most cases we diagnose both the cooling system and the heating system together — they share components and failures in one affect the other. More on heater-specific issues is covered on our AC & heating service page.
