Auto AC Repair & Heating Repair on Columbus's East Side

When your car's AC stops cooling in July or your heater blows cold on a January morning, comfort stops being a luxury and starts being a safety issue. AC Recharge in Columbus — Done Right

"My AC needs a recharge" is what most drivers assume when the air stops blowing cold. Sometimes that's true — refrigerant slowly vents out of older systems over the years, and a proper recharge fixes the problem. But just as often, the real issue is a leak, a failed compressor, a bad expansion valve, or a blend-door actuator that has nothing to do with refrigerant at all.

Recharging a system with a leak is money thrown away — the refrigerant is back on the ground within days or weeks. That's why every AC recharge at Ernie's starts with a free AC inspection: we pressure-test the system, check for leaks with UV dye or an electronic sniffer, and confirm what the system actually needs before we add refrigerant.

If a recharge is the right answer, you get $20 off. If it's not, we'll tell you what the real problem is and what it costs to fix — honestly, before any work begins.

Signs Your Car AC Needs Repair

AC Warning Signs

  • AC blows warm or only mildly cool — classic low-refrigerant symptom, but could also be a compressor, condenser, or electrical issue
  • AC worked fine and then suddenly stopped — usually a leak, a blown fuse, a failed clutch relay, or a tripped pressure switch
  • Weak airflow even at the highest fan setting — likely a failed blower motor, clogged cabin air filter, or a blend-door problem
  • Unusual noises when AC is running — clicking, grinding, squealing, or rattling often means a failing compressor or clutch
  • Musty or sour smell from the vents — bacteria or mold on the evaporator, often cleared up with a cabin filter and evaporator treatment
  • Sweet smell and fogging on the inside of the windshield — coolant leak from the heater core; AC-adjacent but important
  • Water or oil leaking inside the cabin — typically a blocked AC drain or a heater core leak

Signs Your Car Heater Needs Repair

Heating System Warning Signs

  • Heater blows cool or only lukewarm air — low coolant, stuck thermostat, clogged heater core, or a failed blend-door actuator
  • Defroster is slow or ineffective — often linked to the same causes as weak heat
  • Engine takes a long time to reach operating temperature — usually a stuck-open thermostat; the heater has nothing to work with until the engine warms up
  • Heat on one side, cold on the other — almost always a blend-door actuator problem
  • Sweet smell inside the vehicle or fogging windshield — classic heater core leak; coolant is getting into the cabin air
  • Weak airflow regardless of fan speed — blower motor, resistor, or cabin filter
  • Coolant level keeps dropping with no visible leak — possible internal heater core leak

If any of this is happening in your vehicle, call (614) 235-8037. Catching these early is cheaper — a failing heater core can turn into a flooded passenger floor, and a failing AC compressor can contaminate the entire system and drive repair costs up sharply.

AC & Heating Services We Provide

AC Recharge

$20 off every AC recharge, with a free inspection first. R-134a and R-1234yf systems. No recharging leaky systems without your informed consent.

AC Leak Detection

UV dye tracing and electronic leak detection to find exactly where refrigerant is escaping — so we can fix it, not just refill it.

AC Compressor & Clutch

Compressor replacement, clutch repair, and complete system flush and recharge when compressor failure has contaminated the system.

Condenser & Evaporator

Condenser replacement for leaks and rock damage, evaporator replacement for interior leaks, and HVAC component testing.

Heater Core Service

Diagnosis and replacement of leaking heater cores — a big job on most vehicles, done right the first time to avoid a repeat.

Thermostat & Cooling System

Stuck thermostats are the top cause of "my heater doesn't work" complaints. Thermostat replacement plus cooling system inspection.

Blend-Door Actuator

Heat on one side and cold on the other, or no control over temperature at all? Typically a failed blend-door actuator. We diagnose and replace.

Blower Motor & Controls

Blower motor replacement, resistor and module repair, and fan-speed control diagnostics. Because airflow matters as much as temperature.

AC & Heating FAQ

Common questions from Columbus drivers about AC recharge, AC repair, and heating repair.

How much does a car AC recharge cost?

At Ernie's, we take $20 off every AC recharge, and the inspection is free. Final cost depends on the refrigerant your system uses — older vehicles use R-134a, and newer vehicles (typically 2015 and up) use R-1234yf, which is substantially more expensive. We'll scan the vehicle, identify the correct refrigerant, pressure-test the system, and give you an exact price before anything gets added. Call (614) 235-8037 for a quote on your specific vehicle.

How do I know if my car AC just needs a recharge?

AC that blows warm but still has airflow usually points to low refrigerant, a leak, or a failed compressor. A simple recharge is only the right answer if the system is sealed and the refrigerant has slowly vented over time — normal for older vehicles. If your AC lost cooling suddenly, that's almost always a leak, and a recharge without fixing the leak is money wasted. Our free AC inspection tells you which situation you're in before we charge you for anything.

Why is my car AC blowing warm air?

The most common causes are low refrigerant (from a slow leak), a failed AC compressor, a clogged or failed expansion valve, a faulty condenser, or an electrical issue like a bad clutch relay or pressure sensor. Less commonly, the blend-door actuator inside the dashboard has failed and cold air is mixing with heated air. A proper diagnosis requires pressure testing and sometimes a UV dye leak check. We diagnose first, then quote — so you're not paying to guess.

Why doesn't my car heater work?

The most common reasons a car heater stops working are a low coolant level, a clogged or failed heater core, a stuck thermostat, a failed blend-door actuator, or a failed blower motor. Many heater complaints are actually cooling-system problems — if the engine isn't reaching operating temperature, the heater has no heat source. Our technicians diagnose the entire chain to find the actual cause rather than replacing parts on guesswork.

Why does my AC smell bad when I turn it on?

A musty or sour smell when you first turn on the AC usually means mold or bacteria has grown on the evaporator or in the HVAC ducts — a common issue in humid climates. Replacing the cabin air filter and treating the evaporator with an antibacterial solution typically resolves it. A sweet smell points to a coolant leak from the heater core. A burning or electrical smell needs immediate attention.

Do you work on AC and heating systems in both foreign and domestic vehicles?

Yes. Ernie's services AC and heating systems on Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Nissan, Subaru, BMW, Volkswagen, Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, Jeep, and more — both foreign and domestic. We have the recovery equipment, diagnostic scan tools, and refrigerant supply to handle R-134a and R-1234yf systems.
