Tires are the only part of your vehicle that actually touches the road — which makes them one of the most important safety components you own. Ernie's Automotive Service has been selling, mounting, balancing, rotating, and aligning tires for east-side Columbus drivers since 1978. Whether you're looking for budget-friendly replacements, premium performance tires, or just need an alignment to stop eating through the set you just bought, we handle it under one roof.
Most drivers don't realize how tightly tires and alignments are linked. New tires without an alignment is often wasted money — uneven wear can ruin a fresh tire set in just a few thousand miles. That's why we treat them as one service, not two, and why our pricing reflects that when you do both together.

Tires wear gradually, so the decline is easy to ignore — until suddenly it isn't. Watch for these signs:
Not sure where your tires stand? Stop in or call (614) 235-8037 for a free tire inspection. We measure tread depth at multiple points and check for wear patterns that point to alignment or suspension issues.
Hercules tires featured with our standing buy-3-get-1-free offer, plus a wide selection of premium and mid-tier brands. We can source almost any tire on request and match tread type to your driving needs.
Proper mounting on modern wheel equipment, computerized balancing to eliminate highway vibration, and correct torque specifications. Good mounting and balancing is what separates a safe tire installation from a problem-prone one.
Every 5,000–7,500 miles, rotation evens out wear between front and rear tires — extending total tire life and often keeping warranties valid. Many tire warranties require documented rotation.
Proper combination plug-and-patch repairs from inside the tire when the puncture is in the tread area and 1/4" or smaller. Sidewall damage isn't safely repairable — we tell you honestly when replacement is the only option.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System sensors, valve stems, and service kits. Old TPMS hardware is a common cause of slow leaks after new tire installation — we replace aging components when needed.
Proper disposal of your old tires per Ohio regulations — included with every tire replacement. No need to figure out where to take the old ones.
Alignment is the adjustment of your vehicle's suspension angles — the connection between the vehicle, the wheels, and the road surface. Proper alignment means your tires wear evenly, the vehicle tracks straight, and steering feels responsive. Bad alignment means accelerated tire wear, poor handling, and reduced fuel economy.
The standard modern alignment service — measures and adjusts all four wheels to manufacturer specifications. Appropriate for nearly all modern vehicles, including most passenger cars, SUVs, and trucks.
Two-wheel alignment for older vehicles with a solid rear axle. Less common on modern vehicles but still the correct service for certain applications — we verify what your vehicle needs before recommending.
Not sure if you need an alignment? We measure current alignment angles and compare to spec. If you're in tolerance, no alignment needed. If you're out, we'll quote the adjustment.
Any time struts, control arms, tie rods, or ball joints are replaced, an alignment is required. We include alignment pricing in every suspension estimate so there are no surprises.
The single most common mistake drivers make is installing new tires on a vehicle that's out of alignment. Uneven alignment forces the tires to scrub sideways as the vehicle rolls forward — you can't see it happening, but it's chewing through the tread rapidly and unevenly. A brand new tire set can lose 20%, 30%, or more of its expected life in just a few thousand miles when the alignment is wrong.
An alignment costs a small fraction of a tire. Skipping it to save money can easily cost you an entire set of tires. That's why we check alignment before installing new tires — and why we recommend a 4-wheel alignment with every new tire installation unless a recent alignment inspection confirms the vehicle is still in spec. It's not an upsell; it's protection for the investment you just made in tires.
Buy-3-get-1-free on select Hercules tires, every day. Hercules offers strong quality at mid-tier pricing — a smart choice for everyday drivers. We also carry premium brands when that's the right fit.
Unlike tire-only discount shops, we handle both tires and alignments under one roof — and we explain honestly why both matter. Your new tires last longer this way.

Common questions from east-side Columbus drivers about tires, alignments, and tire service.
The most reliable indicators are tread depth below 4/32 of an inch (use the penny test — insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln's head pointing down; if you can see the top of his head, it's time for replacement), uneven or cupped wear patterns, visible cracking or dry rot in the sidewalls, bulges or bubbles in the sidewall, vibrations at highway speeds, or tires older than six years regardless of tread depth (rubber degrades with age even on low-mileage vehicles). Bring your vehicle in for a free tire inspection — we'll measure tread depth at multiple points and tell you honestly where you stand.
Yes — and it's one of the most common mistakes drivers make. New tires on a vehicle that's out of alignment will wear unevenly, often significantly, within just a few thousand miles. You can ruin a brand new set of tires in 5,000 miles if the alignment is off. We strongly recommend a 4-wheel alignment any time you install new tires, unless a recent alignment check confirms the vehicle is still in spec. Think of it this way: an alignment costs a fraction of a tire, and skipping it can cost you an entire tire set.
A standard 4-wheel alignment typically runs $100–$150. Some shops charge separately for "thrust angle" adjustments or for alignments on trucks and vehicles with specialty suspension; we're upfront about whether your vehicle needs any additional work and give you a written estimate before we start. When you buy new tires from us, the alignment is often bundled at a discount — ask about current pricing when you call.
A front-end (two-wheel) alignment adjusts the front wheel angles only — suitable for some older vehicles with a solid rear axle. A 4-wheel alignment measures and adjusts all four wheels, checking that the rear wheels are properly aligned with the vehicle's centerline and that the front wheels are aligned to the rear. Almost all modern vehicles require a 4-wheel alignment to get a proper result. We perform 4-wheel alignments by default because it's what most vehicles on the road today need.
Every 5,000–7,500 miles — roughly every other oil change is a good rule of thumb. Rotation evens out wear between the front and rear tires (which wear at different rates because of steering, braking, and drivetrain loads) and can dramatically extend total tire life. Many tire warranties require documented rotations to stay in effect, so we keep records of rotation service for warranty purposes.
Yes. Ernie's runs a standing buy-3-get-1-free promotion on select Hercules tires. Hercules is a solid mid-tier tire brand that offers strong value compared to premium brands, with good warranty coverage on most models. We also carry other brands and can source almost any tire on request — call (614) 235-8037 to discuss what's right for your vehicle and driving needs.
Tire sizes are printed on the sidewall in a format like 215/65R17. The first number (215) is the tire width in millimeters. The second number (65) is the sidewall aspect ratio — in this case, the sidewall is 65% of the width. The R indicates radial construction. The final number (17) is the wheel diameter in inches. When replacing tires, you generally match the original spec exactly, though alternate sizes and upgraded load ratings are sometimes options. We'll verify the correct size and load rating for your specific vehicle before ordering.
Usually, yes — with caveats. Tire repairs are safe and effective when the puncture is in the tread area (not the sidewall or shoulder), the hole is 1/4 inch or smaller, and the tire hasn't been driven on while flat. The correct repair is a combination plug-and-patch applied from the inside of the tire, not an external-only plug. Sidewall damage, larger holes, or tires that have been driven on while flat are not safely repairable and require replacement. We inspect before repairing — if it can't be repaired safely, we tell you honestly.
Modern vehicles (2008+) use TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) sensors inside each wheel. The sensor's rubber valve stem and battery have a limited life — typically 7–10 years. When we install new tires, we often recommend new TPMS service kits (valve stem, seals, and grommet) and sometimes new sensors if the existing ones are aging. Using old, brittle TPMS components with new tires is a common cause of slow leaks shortly after tire installation.
