Warning Signs You Need Brake Repair

Brake problems almost always announce themselves — usually in ways that get progressively louder, harder, or more obvious. Pay attention to these:

When to Schedule Brake Service Immediately

  • Squealing or squeaking when braking — often a brake pad wear indicator telling you the pads are near the end of their life
  • Grinding noise when braking — the pads are completely worn and the metal backing plate is grinding into the rotor; stop driving
  • Soft or spongy brake pedal — air or moisture in the brake fluid, a failing master cylinder, or a leak in the hydraulic system
  • Brake pedal goes to the floor — major hydraulic issue; don't drive it
  • Vehicle pulls to one side when braking — stuck caliper, uneven pad wear, or brake hose issue
  • Pulsation or vibration through the pedal — typically warped rotors
  • Longer stopping distances — worn pads, contaminated fluid, or low brake fluid
  • Brake warning light on the dashboard — low fluid, worn pads, or a hydraulic issue
  • ABS light on — antilock brake system fault; needs diagnostic scan
  • Burning smell after braking — overheated brakes, often from stuck calipers or aggressive driving on a hot day
  • Brake fluid leak — clear to light amber fluid under the vehicle, often near the wheels
  • Parking brake not holding — cable or drum shoe issue; often fails unnoticed until it matters

Any of this happening? Call Ernie's at (614) 235-8037. If the brakes aren't safe to drive on, we can arrange a tow — free within 10 miles with $250+ in labor. Don't chance it.

Brake Services We Provide

Ernie's handles the full brake system on foreign and domestic vehicles — not just pads and rotors. Under one roof:

Brake Pad Replacement

The most common brake service. We measure remaining pad thickness, inspect rotors, and install quality pads matched to your vehicle and driving style — ceramic, semi-metallic, or organic depending on what's right.

Brake Rotor Replacement

When rotors are below the minimum-thickness specification, warped, or scored from worn pads, replacement is the right call. We don't turn rotors that are too thin — that's a safety issue, not a cost-saving measure.

Rotor Resurfacing

When rotors still have enough thickness and are only lightly warped or scored, resurfacing (machining them flat) is sometimes appropriate. We measure and decide case-by-case.

Brake Caliper Repair & Replacement

Stuck calipers cause uneven pad wear, pulling under braking, and overheating. We rebuild or replace failed calipers and inspect slide pins and hardware as part of any caliper work.

Brake Fluid Exchange

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, lowering its boiling point. We test moisture content and perform proper fluid exchange at manufacturer-recommended intervals — typically every two to three years.

Master Cylinder & Hydraulic Lines

Soft pedal, low fluid level with no visible leak, or pedal that sinks under pressure often traces to a failing master cylinder or deteriorated brake hoses. We diagnose and repair.

ABS Diagnostics & Repair

ABS warning light, wheel speed sensor faults, and ABS module issues. We have the scan tools to read ABS codes and diagnose the specific fault rather than guessing.

Parking Brake Service

Cable adjustment, replacement of seized parking brake shoes, and repair of electronic parking brake actuators on newer vehicles. Often discovered only when your parking brake fails to hold the car.

Brake Inspection

Free inspection with any service visit. We measure pad thickness, check rotor condition, look at brake fluid, and inspect hoses and calipers. You'll know exactly what's going on with your brakes before a problem turns expensive.

Why Choose Ernie's Brake Shop

Inspection First, Replacement Second

We measure pad thickness, inspect rotor condition, and check fluid before recommending anything. If your brakes have 40% pad life left, we'll tell you that — not push an unnecessary replacement.

$50 Off Brake Service, Every Day

$25 off per axle, no coupon needed. Do fronts only: $25 off. Do fronts and rears together: $50 off. A small thank-you for bringing your brakes to Ernie's instead of the chain down the street.

Honest About Rotors

Modern rotors are often too thin to resurface safely on their first brake job. We measure, then tell you honestly — we don't machine rotors below spec to save you money short-term and cost you safety long-term.

Brake Repair FAQ

Common questions from east-side Columbus drivers about brake repair, brake pad replacement, and brake service.

How do I know if I need brake repair?

The most common signs are squealing or squeaking when you brake (often a brake pad wear indicator), grinding noises (pads completely worn, damaging the rotors), a soft or spongy brake pedal (air or moisture in the brake fluid, or a failing master cylinder), the vehicle pulling to one side when braking (stuck caliper or uneven pad wear), shuddering or vibration through the pedal (warped rotors), longer stopping distances, a brake warning light, or the ABS light staying on. If your brakes are doing any of this, schedule an inspection immediately — brakes are the one system on your vehicle that you cannot keep driving with if something is wrong.

How much does a brake pad replacement cost?

Brake pad replacement on most passenger vehicles runs $150–$350 per axle, depending on the pad material and whether rotors need to be replaced or resurfaced. Performance vehicles, trucks, and luxury brands typically cost more. Ernie's takes $25 off per axle on brake service — so $25 off if you're doing front brakes only, or $50 off if you're doing front and rear. Call (614) 235-8037 for a quote on your specific vehicle.

How often should brake pads be replaced?

Most brake pads last 30,000 to 70,000 miles, but the range is wide because it depends on driving style (city stop-and-go wears pads faster than highway driving), the weight of the vehicle, and the pad material. Front brakes typically wear faster than rear brakes because front brakes do 60–80% of the stopping work. The best way to know is to have the pads inspected and measured — we do this for free as part of any service visit and can tell you exactly how much life is left.

Do brake rotors always need to be replaced with new pads?

Not always, but increasingly often on modern vehicles. Rotors have a minimum thickness specification stamped on them, and once they're below spec they cannot be legally or safely resurfaced — they must be replaced. Many modern vehicles come from the factory with rotors that are barely above the minimum, meaning they reach the replacement threshold at their first brake job. We measure every rotor and tell you honestly whether resurfacing is an option or whether replacement is the right call. We won't turn rotors that are too thin just to save you money now — that's a safety issue.

What's the difference between ceramic, semi-metallic, and organic brake pads?

Ceramic pads are quieter, produce less brake dust on wheels, and typically last longer — they're a great choice for daily drivers and many modern vehicles specify them from the factory. Semi-metallic pads provide stronger stopping power and handle heat better, which makes them preferred for trucks, towing, and performance driving, but they tend to be noisier and create more dust. Organic pads are the softest and quietest but wear faster and are less common now. We recommend the correct pad material for your vehicle and driving style — not a one-size-fits-all choice.

Should I have my brake fluid flushed?

Yes, periodically. Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air over time. Moisture-contaminated fluid lowers the fluid's boiling point, which can cause a soft pedal under heavy braking. Most manufacturers recommend brake fluid service every two to three years, and it's also good practice after any major brake repair. We test brake fluid moisture content and can tell you whether service is due or not. This is another case where "flush" and "exchange" get used interchangeably — we perform a proper fluid exchange, not a drain-and-fill.

Is it safe to drive with grinding brakes?

No. Grinding means your brake pads are completely worn out and the metal backing plate is grinding directly into the rotor. Every mile you drive like this damages the rotor further, increases your stopping distance, and can eventually lead to brake failure. What started as a $200 pad replacement becomes an $800 pads-and-rotors job — or much worse. If your brakes are grinding, bring the vehicle in immediately. If it isn't safe to drive, call us at (614) 235-8037 and we can arrange a tow.

My brakes pulsate when I stop — what's wrong?

Pulsation through the brake pedal when stopping almost always means warped rotors — caused by uneven heat distribution, hard braking after high-speed driving, or manufacturing variation. On older vehicles, resurfacing the rotors can sometimes correct the pulsation. On modern vehicles with thin factory rotors, replacement is usually the right answer. Worn or loose suspension components can also cause pulsation, so we inspect those too as part of a proper brake diagnostic.
