Suspension Repair & Strut Replacement on Columbus's East Side

A worn suspension costs you comfort, control, and tires. When your vehicle bounces excessively over bumps, dives under braking, leans into turns, or chews through tire tread unevenly, the suspension is telling you something — and ignoring it is rarely cheap. Ernie's Automotive Service has been handling shock and strut replacement, ball joint repair, tie rod service, and power steering repair for east-side Columbus drivers since 1978.

Forty-eight years on East Main Street means we've seen just about every suspension complaint a Columbus vehicle can develop. That experience shows up in faster, more accurate diagnoses and suspension repairs that actually fix the problem — not just replace the part the customer asked about.

Warning Signs Your Suspension Needs Attention

Suspension components wear gradually — most drivers adapt to the decline without noticing until something obvious breaks. Watch for these signals so you can get ahead of the problem:

When to Schedule a Suspension Inspection

  • Excessive bouncing — the vehicle bounces more than once or twice after rolling over a bump; classic worn-shock or worn-strut symptom
  • Nose-dive under braking — the front end dips noticeably when you brake, especially at higher speeds
  • Leaning or swaying in turns — body roll feels exaggerated and the vehicle takes longer to settle after cornering
  • Uneven or cupped tire wear — distinctive scalloped pattern on the tread is almost always shocks or struts
  • Vehicle sitting lower on one corner — usually a broken coil spring, failed air suspension bag, or blown strut
  • Clunking or knocking over bumps — often worn strut mounts, control-arm bushings, sway-bar links, or ball joints
  • Steering wheel wandering or loose feel — can indicate worn tie rods, ball joints, or steering-rack bushings
  • Steering pulls to one side — alignment is off, often because a suspension component has worn or shifted
  • Visible oil leaking down the strut or shock body — the damper has failed; replacement is due
  • Vibration in the steering wheel — can stem from tires, brakes, or worn suspension/steering components

Any of these sound familiar? Call Ernie's at (614) 235-8037. Suspension inspections are fast, and catching a worn component early can save you an expensive tire replacement down the road.

Suspension & Steering Services We Provide

From a single strut replacement to full front-end rebuilds, we handle the entire range of suspension and steering work for foreign and domestic vehicles:

Strut Replacement

Complete strut assemblies or bare struts, installed in pairs per axle. An alignment is performed afterward to protect your new tires and restore proper handling.

Shock Absorber Replacement

Rear shocks on most cars and all four corners on trucks and SUVs. Quality NAPA and OE-equivalent shocks, replaced in pairs for balanced ride and handling.

Ball Joints

Worn ball joints cause clunking over bumps, uneven tire wear, and in extreme cases can separate entirely — a serious safety failure. We diagnose and replace.

Tie Rods & Steering Linkage

Inner and outer tie rods, steering rack bushings, idler arms, pitman arms. Loose steering and uneven tire wear often trace back here.

Control Arms & Bushings

Control-arm replacement or bushing repair when worn bushings create clunks, sloppy steering, or alignment that won't hold settings.

Sway Bars & End Links

Clunking in turns or over uneven pavement often means a failed sway-bar end link — a low-cost repair that dramatically improves ride quality.

Coil & Leaf Springs

Broken coil springs, sagging leaf springs, and air-suspension repair for vehicles so equipped. Ride height restored, handling restored.

Power Steering Repair

Hydraulic systems (pumps, hoses, pressure lines, racks) and electric power steering (motors, sensors, modules). Stiff steering, whines, or a power-steering warning light — we diagnose and repair.

Why Choose Ernie's for Suspension Work

48 Years of Suspension Experience

Since 1978 we've replaced more struts, shocks, and ball joints than we can count. That experience means we diagnose accurately the first time — not guess and part-swap.

Alignment Included in the Conversation

Suspension work almost always requires an alignment afterward. We include alignment in every quote so you're not surprised at the counter.

NAPA Peace of Mind Warranty

Qualifying suspension repairs backed by the NAPA AutoCare 24-month / 24,000-mile nationwide warranty — honored at 17,000+ NAPA AutoCare shops across the country.

Foreign & Domestic

Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Nissan, Subaru, BMW, Volkswagen, Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, Jeep — suspension geometry expertise on all modern vehicles.

Pairs Replaced, Not Singles

We replace shocks and struts in pairs on the same axle. One new strut plus one worn strut creates uneven damping and unpredictable handling — not how we do suspension work.

Honest Quotes, Written Estimates

Full inspection, plain-language explanation of what's worn, and a written estimate before any work begins. No surprise charges on the invoice.

Suspension Repair FAQ

Common questions from east-side Columbus drivers dealing with shocks, struts, and steering.

How do I know if my car needs new shocks or struts?

The most reliable signs are excessive bouncing after hitting a bump, the nose of the vehicle diving noticeably under braking, leaning or swaying heavily in turns, uneven or cupped tire wear, visible oil leaks down the side of the shock or strut body, and a general loss of ride quality — bumps feeling harsher than they used to. Shocks and struts typically need replacement somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000 miles, depending on road conditions and driving style.

What's the difference between shocks and struts?

Both dampen suspension movement, but a strut is a structural part of the suspension — it holds the wheel in place and supports the vehicle's weight. A shock absorber only dampens; it doesn't hold anything. Most modern vehicles use struts on the front and shocks on the rear, though trucks and some SUVs use shocks at all four corners. Replacing struts is more involved than replacing shocks, usually requires an alignment afterward, and costs more. We'll tell you exactly which your vehicle has and what the proper repair looks like.

How much does strut replacement cost?

Strut replacement cost varies widely depending on the vehicle, whether you're replacing one axle or all four corners, and whether loaded-strut assemblies or bare struts are being installed. Most jobs fall in the several-hundred to low-four-figure range per axle, plus an alignment. We provide a written estimate after inspection before any work begins. Call (614) 235-8037 for a quote on your specific vehicle.

Do struts always need to be replaced in pairs?

Yes, strongly recommended. A new strut on one side and a worn strut on the other creates uneven damping, uneven ride height, and unpredictable handling — especially in emergency maneuvers. Anytime we replace a strut, we replace both on the same axle. The same applies to shocks.

Do you do alignments after suspension work?

Yes. Any time strut assemblies, control arms, tie rods, or ball joints are replaced, an alignment is required afterward. Even work on shock absorbers alone can sometimes shift alignment. We include the alignment discussion in every suspension estimate so there are no surprises on the final invoice.

Do you repair power steering?

Yes. We repair both hydraulic power steering systems (pumps, hoses, pressure lines, racks) and electric power steering systems (motors, sensors, control modules) found on most vehicles from around 2010 onward. Signs of a power steering problem include a heavy or stiff steering wheel, whining or groaning when you turn, jerky steering response, or a power-steering warning light on the dashboard.

Can bad suspension cause uneven tire wear?

Yes — and it's one of the most common expensive consequences of delaying suspension repair. Worn struts, shocks, or control-arm bushings allow the tire to move out of its intended contact pattern with the road, causing cupping, feathering, or uneven inner or outer edge wear. Replacing an $800 set of tires before realizing the struts are shot means you'll do it again sooner than you should.
